Flygt

Flygt is a world leading product brand for submersible pumps and mixers.

It all started in the small town of Lindås in southern Sweden, where Per Alfred Stenberg, a blacksmith and mould maker, established a foundry in 1901. In Stockholm, Hilding Flygt, an engineer, set up a pump and fan sales company in 1922. A newspaper advertisement brought the two companies into contact with one another in 1929, and led to the Stenberg brothers beginning to produce Flygt pumps in Lindås.

Sixten Englesson, an engineer, invented the first submersible drainage pump in 1947 and the first submersible sewage pump in 1956. During the 1970s, the product range was expanded by mixers and other products.

The inventions laid the foundations for the expansion of Flygt onto the international market. This began with a sales company set up in the Netherlands in 1954, which was soon followed by sales companies in West Germany, Canada and the USA. The expansion continued during the 1960s, when seven additional overseas companies were founded.

Throughout the Flygt history spanning more than a century, a large proportion of the production work was retained in Lindås. But Flygt products are currently also made in Germany, China, Italy, Argentina and the Netherlands.

In 1968, the company was taken over by the ITT Corporation.

Throughout the last half century the Flygt brand has continued to lead the submersible industry, with inventions such as the submersible mixer, the submersible sewage pump, and the banana blade mixer. Flygt continues to be the market innovator, with products such as the N-pump, which revolutionized submersible pumping. Below is a brief overview of the Flygt history:
